 Jeff:

"The first time I met with a counselor at FCS, I was very angry and defensive. I felt like the whole world was against me. I didn’t believe my counselor the first time she tried to explain that I had more control over my anger than I realized. I agreed to stick with the counseling, for a while anyway. With my counselor’s help, I eventually learned that being angry is a choice I make. Now I have learned to manage the way I think and react to situations in a more productive way. Even my family has noticed that I seem happier and less defensive."

Program Description

JSAP provides substance abuse prevention and education for teens referred to the program by parents, juvenile courts, probation officers, Juvenile Conference Committees, schools, etc. The program provides services to teens ages 13 - 17. The majority of participants are referred by the local juvenile justice system, and the majority of them are first-time offenders.

JSAP is not a substance abuse treatment program, but a prevention program for those who are in the beginning stages drug use or who may be considered "at-risk." Teens referred to the program may not have been involved in any actual arrest offense involving drug use, but there are indications that they are at-risk for developing a drug habit in the near future.

The concepts, skills and issues participants have the opportunity to develop through JSAP include:

bulletDrug Types and Effects
bulletBehavior Modification
bulletAlternatives to Substance Abuse
bulletRisk of STD's/HIV/AIDS
bulletResisting Peer Pressure
bulletGoal Setting
bulletSigns of Substance Abuse
bulletAnger Management
bulletRational Thinking

Groups meet weekly, with each meeting lasting two hours. Parents are expected to attend with their teens on at least three different occasions, outlined at the beginning of the program.

JSAP has an educational philosophy and utilizes lecture, group discussions, role plays, guest speakers, homework, and videos. Program participants may have to submit to random drug screenings during the time they are in the program.
