Johnnie: “I
grew up with a lot of resentment toward my Dad. He left my Mom to raise me
by herself and when he was around, he usually put me down and told me I
would never amount to anything. I felt rejected by my Dad, but still really
wanted his approval. As a teenager, I got involved with marijuana, which
led to other problems in my life. I developed an attitude of not caring
about other people, even my Mom. I saw myself as destined to fail.
“My
attitude use eventually led me to Family Counseling Service.
I was angry and resistant at first. But my counselor explained that if I
wanted to make a success of my life, it could only be up to me. He said
that my success would be the result of my determination to achieve in spite
of my circumstances. He stressed the importance of having a positive
attitude and not allowing my past to limit my future.
“It
took a while, but now I’ve started spending quality time with my Dad and I
feel better about myself. I’m also taking advanced classes at school and
I’m making plans for a positive future.”
