Death By Chocolate Tournament

Tuscaloosa’s Death By Chocolate Tournament will feature the best chocolate dishes in town!  By participating, you can promote your own business, as well as support the non-profit services of Family Counseling Service.

NEW THIS YEAR: This year’s tournament will feature both a Chef’s Choice Award (first and second place - judged by Chef Cameron Parsons, Jr.) as well as a People’s Choice Award (voted on by attendees at the event).  A Best Presentation Award will also be given, which like last year is based on your booth/table decorations.

During the event, each competitor will be asked to bring their dish on stage where a classically trained chef will be waiting to sample each dessert. The competitor will introduce themselves, what business they are representing and describe the dessert they are presenting. If no one from the business wants to come on stage to announce the dessert, you can have a description prepared and a board member of Family Counseling Service will present your dish on your behalf.

We hope you find this change a fun and positive shift in this event. We wanted to have you, the competitors, be able to engage with the 500+ audience members in a direct way and to also have your dish judged by  a classically trained chef. Find out more about our judge on the following page!

Guidelines for Entries

  • There will be approximately 12 participants in the Tournament.

  • Each entrant must be a licensed food server (e.g., restaurant or caterer).

  • Entrants may enter either one or two chocolate items, but no more than two. You will only present one dish to the judge.

  • Entrants must provide enough of each chocolate item entered to allow tasting by 250 individuals.  (A tasting should be ample, but does not need to be a full serving.)  There were approximately 500 in attendance at last year’s event, so additional tastings are encouraged, as you are able.

  • Entrants must arrive at the Tuscaloosa River Market no later than 4:30 p.m. on the day of the event and have at least one person on hand to man their table throughout the event (until 7:30 p.m.).  Participants should be set up and ready to serve no later than 5:00 p.m.—we always have early birds!

  • Each entrant will be provided an eight-foot table and cloth on which to serve food items.  Entrants will be responsible for providing other décor for their table.  Entrants may use their table to exhibit business information and promotions.  We encourage you to use this opportunity to promote your business!

  • Please remember to bring any napkins, forks, plates, etc. that are required in order to enjoy your dessert.

  • Due to fire code requirements, expected number of participants and space limitations, the space for each display will be limited to approximately 8’ x 6’ and will be delineated by a line in front of the table.  We ask that all participants create their display in such a way that it will not exceed this line.  All elements of the overall presentation, including the table, must fit within this space.

  • Registrations must be received no later than March 31, 2019.
